What is NUNKI?
Nunki is the traditional name of σ Sagittarii, one of the brightest stars in the constellation Sagittarius.
Located in the heart of the Milky Way’s rich star fields, it shines as a blue-white giant approximately 220 light-years from Earth.
In ancient Babylonian astronomy, Nunki was known as a “Star of the Sea” and was associated with sacred knowledge, navigation, and the guidance of travelers crossing vast and uncertain distances.
For centuries, sailors and explorers looked to stars like Nunki as fixed points in an ever-changing world.
Positioned near the celestial archer of Sagittarius, it was often interpreted as a symbol of direction, ambition, and purposeful movement—an anchor in the sky that helped humanity navigate both physical oceans and the metaphorical unknown.
